First of the new series of ES cassette recorders, with a long line of perfected siblings to come - all very successful. Separated and twin-mono record and play boards, LC-OFC Laser Amorphous heads, closed-Loop dual capstan with Quartz-locked DD drive, separate compartments for the drive, control and audio sections, all the bells and whistles of 1980s decks, dual Dolby IC and a power transformer worthy of a powerful integrated amplifier. All this and more made for a worldwide bestseller. Like all of Sony's top recorders, whether old (TC-K8B, TC-FX7, TC-K88B) or newer (TC-K777, TC-K777ES, TC-K990ES, TC-K555ESJ, TC-KA7ES) - never forget that Sony's first successes came from tape products and it remained so for more than 40 years, in both professional and consumer fields! |

Second version of the original TC-K777 masterpiece. All three versions are basically the same deck: solid, excellent sounding and arguably one of Sony's best and one of the best cassette recorders full stop. In 1983 Stereo Sound ranked it as Best Buy above the three monster Naks (Dragon, ZX-9, 1000ZXL). The differences between the first non-ES version, the ES and subsequent ESII are as follows: the addition of a C Dolby NR (TC-777ES), the switch from S&F to Laser Amorphous Head; the replacement of the FeCr tape position by an MPX Filter (previously located on the back), the disappearance of the remote plug (777ESII) and the addition of a 2nd power transformer. Of course, the colour changed as well: from the silver 777 to the "ES-magenta" (777ES) to the 1980s black (777ESII). The rest is the same: FET SEPP i/os, dual-mono boards, motor and reliability and quality. Sony made much of its reputation with tape recorders and the TC-K777ES was a fine example of this fact. One of the best cassette recorders ever built, bar none. |
